AUSN helps save a piece of history with donation to USS The Sullivans

The military park that cares for the USS The Sullivans, a Fletcher-class destroyer that saw action in World War II and Korea, thanked the Association of the U.S. Navy this week for donating nearly $12,000 for the repair and preservation of the ship.

The ship took on more than 3 million gallons of water when the hull was breached, and workers scrambled to save the ship at its home in the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park.

When the call went out for help, AUSN responded. Dozens of members donated money to save the ship, and AUSN matched that donation. In total, AUSN and its members donated $11,919.48, and the president of the military park wrote us this week to say “thank you.”

“Your gift directly supports the fight to raise USS The Sullivans and to preserve this National Historic Landmark as a source of inspiration and pride for generations to come,” the park’s president and CEO Paul Marzello wrote. “Please extend my sincere gratitude to all the members of the Assoc. of the Navy. Your support is greatly appreciated.”

Just this week, the park’s ongoing effort to save and preserve the ship got an even bigger boost when the New York state assembly allocated $500,000 from the state’s discretionary capital fund to save the ship.
