America’s most effective foreign policy tools have always been diplomacy and our military might. One brings the promise of a positive relationship with the world’s most powerful nation, while the other is a more forceful tool that we employ when diplomatic efforts fail. The carrot and the stick approach are two gears of our foreign policy engine that must work together. We use diplomacy to cajole, influence and gather intelligence, and when this gear works well, it can elimin
At least 4,500 American citizens have been airlifted out of Afghanistan since mid-August, and as many as 1,500 may remain, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday. The Biden administration has been reluctant to reveal estimates of the number of U.S. citizens who need to be rescued from Taliban forces that now control Kabul. Until Wednesday, the Pentagon would only say that “several thousand” Americans had been rescued, and dismissed questions about how many might be
President Joe Biden said Tuesday he is still pushing to end the initiative to evacuate Americans and allies from Afghanistan by Aug. 31, but said this goal can only be met if Taliban forces cooperate. “The sooner we can finish the better,” Biden said in a White House address. “Each day of operations brings added risks to our troops. But the completion by August 31st depends upon the Taliban continuing to cooperate and allow access to the airport for those who are transporting

Now, with U.S. forces focused solely on evacuating Americans and allies by Aug. 31, reports are surfacing that Taliban forces may be killing families but sparing young daughters to be married off

Taylor said more than 5,200 total U.S. troops are at the airport, and more are on the way. Evacuation flights continue in and out of the airport. Taylor said 12 C-17s departed with more than 2,00
Carlos Del Toro, the freshly confirmed 78th secretary of the Navy, said last week that deterring China is one of his top priorities for the fleet, and said that while China is seeking to become the world’s strongest force at sea, “We will not let this happen.” But China was just one of the “four Cs” that he said he wants to focus on. Culture within the Navy is another urgent priority, he said. “Every Sailor and Marine of all races, genders, religions, and ethnicities must tre
