July 2010 Navy
by CDR Philip T. Varricchio, USNR (Ret)
CDR Phil Varricchio attending an Eleventh District meeting in Cypress, CA, listened to the various reports of other cities. He raised the question as why there was no report from Las Vegas. CAPT Larry LeDoux replied, “You are it.”
The Constitution states that only one officer is required to form a Chapter. CDR Varricchio accepted the challenge to step up to the plate. He created his motto, ACHIEVEMENT. The achievement of a goal is assured the moment you commit yourself.
First was obtaining a list of Naval Officers from the District. This was a printout of past members of the NRA now AUSN. Second was the printing of labels of the one hundred or so officers. Third was the creation of a positive selling letter to try to get their spirit up and create their ambition to become a member in this new organization.
More telephone calls and more letters to encourage the creation of the chapter. A meeting date was set and given out to the few which said they may attend and to many others. The turnout was nine officers, a tremendous showing since some came who had not answered the correspondence. CDR Varricciho used the comparison that the new Chapter was like the commissioning of a ship. Establish the various facets of presentation to the members, impressing the fact that there are many little departments.
There have been five meetings at different homes of the fourteen core members. Future meetings are to be held at the Canyon Gate Country Club, located at 8700 West Sahara Ave.; Las Vegas, NV.
On the 3rd of July, Saturday night, a formal/dinner dance is planned to be held at the Country Club. The 3rd of July was picked since this was the date when General George Washington assembled the Troops in 1775. Various activities are planned with a DJ supplying music.
The Las Vegas Chapter is looking forward to assisting wherever possible the National AUSN Conference to be held on 26-28 August 2010, in Las Vegas, NV.
