March 2011 Navy

By Captain Tom Dufficy

The twenty-third Annual Mess Night (Dining In) of the Burke Chapter took place on 14 January 2011 at the Historic Larchmont Yacht Club, Larchmont, NY. Sixty-five ladies and gentlemen, including ten cadets/ midshipmen from Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy and Fort Schuyler SUNY Maritime took part in the tradition filled and historic event.

The principal speakers this year were Major(s) Brian Iglesias, USMCR and Captain Anton Sattler, USMCR, both combat decorated Marines. Their subject was Chosin, a documentary film about the Chosin Reservoir Campaign that took place in the winter of 1950. Some 15,000 U.S. soldiers and Marines fought their way to freedom and saved the lives of 98,000 refugees in Korea. Major Iglesias was the director and Captain Sattler was the co-producer. Information about the film can be obtained at www.frozenchosin.com.

The Burke Chapter presented their Admiral David Farragut Documentary Film Award to the producers of Chosin.

The Burke Chapter is named in honor of a Naval aviator who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967. Mess Nights are formal dinners that are full of tradition and comradery. The President of the Mess is Captain Tom Dufficy, USNR (Ret). He was most ably assisted by Captain Liam Murphy, NYNM.
