Navy Providing Career Opportunities to UA-Huntsville Job Fair Attendees

By LT (Dr.) Teng K. Ooi, Office of Naval Research (ONR) S&T (Science and Technology (S&T) Unit 102 and Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Nashville

A Navy Campus Liaison Officer (CLO) and a Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Nashville representative participated in the University of Alabama-Huntsville (UA-Huntsville) Job Fair/Career Information Day on 15 September 2010, at the University Fitness Center. This event was sponsored by the UA-Huntsville’s Office of Career Advancement, which superbly coordinated the logistics and execution of the schedule.

The Job Fair attracted hundreds of UA-Huntsville students, alumni, and potential job seekers from all fields including business administration, engineering, science, liberal arts, medicine, and nursing. It provided job seekers the opportunities to meet, interview, and discuss various job opportunities with more than 80 national and regional employers.

The Job Fair was free and open to all UAHuntsville students and alumni interested in career development and career change. These students and alumni discussed employment opportunities, co-ops, internships, and full- and part-time positions.

Job seekers were eager to hear about and discuss Navy Officer Programs, recruiting incentives, and available job opportunities. As a result, a Navy CLO and a recruiter from NRD Nashville successfully promoted Navy awareness-raising efforts and discussed job opportunities, financial aid, scholarships, and various incentive benefits available to students interested in pursuing officer programs with the U.S. Navy.

These officer programs benefit students by significantly reducing tuition expenses while, at the same time, providing training, personal growth, and the opportunity for an excellent career after college. For many students, these programs may be the encouragement needed to complete their bachelor and graduate degrees and advance towards a more successful future.

LT Sam Kennedy (NRD Nashville’s Navy Officer Programs recruiter) stated that recruiters are a valuable resource for assisting students in becoming potential officers in the Navy. They not only ensure that students understand the opportunities available to them, but also they make young people aware of the Navy as an excellent career path.

The Navy recruiter also provided valuable insights on the numerous opportunities available for current and future UAHuntsville students specifically in the medical, nuclear, and Reserve Navy officer programs.

“With such a large pool of potential candidates that you meet in person, you are certain to find the right fit for your available positions. Additionally, we assist students in selecting Navy careers that best fit their skill sets, interests, aptitudes, intelligence, and creativity. Establishing your strategy for attracting the right job seekers is essential in the current challenging economy,” said LT Kennedy.
