August 2010 Navy

by CAPT Loren Page, USN (Ret)

Last month, the membership article started with a look to AUSN’s past and asked you to give a membership to the people of the next generation of our NAVY. The theme of giving continues this month, and the gift is your time. It is the time to prepare for an opportunity to share the AUSN story that includes having the membership PowerPoint and knowing the script that is with the slides. It is the time to make contact with a U. S. Navy unit or facility in your area and be a point of contact with that organization. Consider giving one hour each month, put it on your calendar, have a conversation about current NAVY events and military activities near your home. Be ready to share what AUSN is doing. You can make a difference.

Contact your AUSN District’s President or your District’s Membership VP to get the PowerPoint and script. Let your AUSN District President know which NOSC, NROTC, JNROTC, Recruiting District, Ship, Squadron, Station or other Navy facility that you can be the AUSN point of contact and a source of AUSN information.

I am asking you to give it a try. For only a few hours each year, you can be directly making a difference in today’s and tomorrow’s U.S. Navy and indirectly touching service members through distribution of the magazine and brochures in the coming year. If you agree that this is a powerful way to engage in an additional channel of communication and you want it to last for a long time, consider additional ways that you, your chapter, and your district can be involved with today’s U. S. Navy.

This idea is one of socializing the many ways that Navy people serve our country. An AUSN team that makes contact on a regular basis is an excellent mission for our active members. Remind unit commanding officers to nominate Sailors and junior officers for awards that AUSN National, AUSN Districts, or AUSN Chapters can give to recognize a deserving midshipman, Sailor, or junior officer. The cost is only your time, and the benefit to them and our association has a multiplier effect.

This is also a reminder to give the gift of a membership. Use the membership form that is on this page to mail in your membership gift or submit the membership information on-line by going to the AUSN Web site (www.ausn.org) and click on Join AUSN. Be sure to put your name as the “Sponsor.” I truly believe that the young people in the U. S. Navy will benefit greatly when you share our association’s work with them.
