July 2010 Navy
by Jean Byrd
It could not have been a nicer day for the inaugural AUSN Golf Tournament held at The Courses at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. More than 72 golfers showed up to vie for the $10,000 hole-in-one, longest drives, closest to the pin and first- and second-place prizes!
To top off the perfect day, some golfers had the opportunity to play a few holes with threetime Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington. Joining LaVar was his father Michael Arrington, a Vietnam veteran who spent the day with the AUSN golfers sharing war stories with the Sailors who recently returned from Afghanistan. You can see more about LaVar and Michael Arrington on ausn.org.
Awards were distributed to the winners during lunch and many more raffle prizes were handed out – just about everyone went home with a reminder of the fun had that day. The Washington Redskins generously provided a signed football given as a prize during the raffle. Navy Safe Harbor Foundation also shared in the festivities by holding a 50/50 raffle and selling Mulligans to the players. The proceeds of the raffle went to support in the recovery of seriously wounded, ill and injured Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and their families.
Sponsored by the AUSN National Capitol Chapter, organizers CMDCM Jerry Featherstone, CAPT James J. Parker, and CAPT Jim Diehl were instrumental in the success of this event that was enjoyed by all. If you didn’t make it out to the links this year, there’s always next year – we’ll keep you posted on the date!
