July 2010 Navy
by CAPT Chuck Haunss, NYMM
On 16 April 2010, at the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s Officers Club, Kings Point, New York, the Long Island Chapter of the Naval Reserve Association, now the Association of the United States Navy, held its 20th annual mess night. President and Vice President of the mess were respectively, CDR William Kempner, NYMM, and LT Joshua Lipman, USN. Also assisting were CAPT John Nash, USNR (Ret); RADM John Ingram, NYMM, Deputy Commander; and RADM J. Robert Lunney, NYNM (Ret), Past National President.
Miss Daniella Romano, archivist for the Brooklyn Navy Yard Museum was the guest speaker. Ms. Romano delivered an interesting and informative history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and her talk generated many memories and questions from the members of the audience who had fond associations with the Brooklyn Navy Yard. By evenings end, many sea stories had been shared, friendships renewed, and midshipmen from the US Merchant Marine Academy and cadets from SUNY Maritime College had been introduced to the tradition of “mess night.”
