December 2011/January 2012 - Navy
By Thomas L. Snyder, MD
Captain, MC, USN (Ret)
President (Interim), Fleet Admiral Nimitz Chapter AUSN
Many San Francisco Bay Area Navy people
will warmly remember the well-attended
dinings-out the FADM Nimitz-Golden Gate
Chapter of the old Naval Reserve Association
sponsored in the latter part of the last century. They were
times to meet and greet old and new Navy friends, to
swap sea stories and to enjoy generally being part of the
Navy community.
When the Navy pulled out of the San Francisco Bay
in the late 1990s, that Chapter went “dark.” Now, nearly
fifteen years on, the Chapter namesake’s famous optimism
and “can do” spirit is reawakening: a Steering
Committee of Naval officers and senior petty officers
have rechartered the Fleet Admiral Nimitz Chapter. They
are working on the details that will make the Chapter a
vital part of the Bay Area Navy community again. To this
end, they are planning the first Chapter social event
since about 1994. Captain Phil Roos, USN, Commanding
Officer of the NROTC unit at the University of California
at Berkeley will be our inaugural speaker at the 1
December event. He will review Nimitz’s role in establishing
Naval ROTC at Cal, and will update us on the
NROTC program today.
Plans are afoot for quarterly meetings; membership
outreach—with special emphasis on younger members
of the Navy community—is in the works; regular liaison
with AUSN national leadership is planned.
