The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has asked our help in identifying service men and women who have personal stories to tell about foreclosed mortgages during a deployment.

The House Veterans Affairs Committee (HVAC) held a hearing on this issue back in January during which JP Morgan Chase was severely chastised for its abuse of military members who were foreclosed by the bank.

Three Congressional Bills have been introduced on this issue:

H.R. 544 (Congressman Filner D-CA) would permanently extend  Service Members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) protections for servicemembers against mortgage foreclosures, and for other purposes.

S. 468 (Senator Whitehouse D-CT) and H.R. 1566 (Congressman Walz D-MN) would extend the foreclosure protection period from 9 mos. to 24 mos. and impose penalties for violation of the statute.

The Committee is interested in contacting military men and women who have been illegally foreclosed, including activated Guard and Reserve members.

IF you know any service member that has been affected – please have them email me – not later than COB Thursday – 12 MAY 2012 at ike.puzon@ausn.org
